ENGAGEMENT PROPOSAL UNDER THE MILKY WAY

This proposal is up there as one of the most unique and technically challenging proposals I’ve ever photographed. Praveen reached out to me with a clear vision — he wanted to do a surprise proposal under the Milky Way. He told his partner, Chandrani, that he had booked an astrophotography portrait session with me to celebrate their trip and get some good photos of them. Little did she know, a secret proposal plan was also in the works!

As is the nature of outdoor adventures, mama earth makes the final call on how things turn out. The afternoon of the shoot, the wind picked up and I was feeling pretty apprehensive on how the night sky would look. The last thing I wanted was for the bright Big Bend night sky to be covered in clouds. We moved forward with the session as planned and crossed our fingers that the wind would die down and the stars would be out.

Lucky for us, the stars did show up and we got a beautiful view of the Milky Way! While we did still have lots of wind (seriously props to P + C for braving that cold), it was worth it for the incredible proposal that Praveen had planned.

Best Time of Year to See the Milky Way

If you’re planning to visit Big Bend and want to see the Milky Way, I recommend planning your trip for July/August, or March/April! It’s also important to check the moon calendar and plan to visit the park during a new moon so the night sky will be as dark as possible— which in turn will give you the best view of the stars.
